Lyme Disease is no Longer an Innocent Infection says The New Yorker Magazine

Ticked OFF Lyme keynote SpeakerLong debated as a potentially life altering pernicious illness, Lyme disease, caused by a bacterial infection, borrelia burgdorferi has confounded millions of sick people and the medical community for close to 4 decades now.

Michael Spector of The New Yorker Magazine delves into the mayhem surrounding the Infectious Disease Society’s denial that the bacteria can morph into auto-immune style illness, versus the frank clinical findings savvy doctors, patients and advocates have unearthed that does substantiate that borrelia CAN reek havoc in many many cases, leaving people bedridden and suffering.

It is time for the heavy lifting to begin in terms of dollars, research and medical collaboration to unite in order to unravel the disturbing controversy of Lyme disease and find effective early and late stage diagnostics, and long overdue proper treatments for both the simple acute form of the bacterial infection AND the complicated chronic symptoms so many fumble with.

Good job Michael Spector!!! He received 200,000,000 replies to an op-ed he ran regarding Mitt Romney’s political position that Lyme disease needed attention in the 2011 Presidential campaign. This enormous red flag of human outcry prompted Spector to not just ‘dis’ the Romney stance but to instead explore the Lyme disease topic—– he has finally done what we have been waiting for—opened the can of worms on a HIDDEN PUBLIC HEALTH CARE CRISIS!

“The Florence Nightingale of Lyme”- California was Great!

A whirlwind week in California, bringing Lyme disease resources and tools to many, was a wonderful experience! How fortunate I was to stay with cherished old friends, meet such special people and soak in the glorious spring sunshine. These “Lyme Mission” trips I have been making since “Out of the Woods” was published in November 2011 are nothing short of miracles. So much good comes from it all!

I am ecstatic to have regained my health, to be strong enough again to travel nationally and speak on behalf of Lyme. The universe aligns me time and again with fortuitous connections, opportunities and support while on the road. And to be instilling hope and camaraderie amongst the townships I visit feels so important. Most vivid to me is that my personal Lyme experience and professional knowledge are making a difference.

My heart just beams each time one of you tells me how helpful “Out of the Woods” has been. I know in that moment I did a good job with the book. And, then, the heartfelt handshakes, hugs and tears shared at the end of my presentation strike so deeply in my core. I’ve walked the “Lyme Road” with all of you and when I feel your suffering, confusion and fragility at these talks I feel inspired to keep at it all, even though it is hugely time-consuming and not financially profitable. The healer in me cannot let others flail.

So, with deep meditations, resting, swimming (when possible), and the laughter of friendship buoying me while traveling, somehow, I believe that if I keep at this- visiting stricken regions, holding a lamplight of inspiration, making this illness more publicly talked about, I will affect a change. A change for the better- more attention, earlier diagnostics, more thorough treatments, maybe even a vaccine! Am I crazy to be working so hard? Is it possible I can keep it up with only $5 admission at the door helping cover my travel expenses? I don’t know. Yet my instinct says I’m doing the right thing.

One of my attendees said “Katina, you are the Florence Nightingale of Lyme, comforting others and pushing for change. Thank you.” That was a sterling remark to hear uttered. As an eight year old girl, my favorite books were Florence Nightingale’s biography and “Little House on the Prairie.” Here I am, ministering to the sick and seriously wounded. Life is a marvelous, spiraling pirouette!

Thank you Maritza Padgett, Bonni Rooney and all my fabulous new friends at San Diego Lyme Support. We had a daffy series of monkey wrenches and we overcame. We were bounced out of the library by a big bash with the mayor, superseding us, a mere 24 hours prior to my appearance. Frantic phone calls, emails, makeshift signage, and we relocated to nearby Hoyt Park, my first outdoor venue. Maritza’s pop-up tents, folding chairs, and a stalwart Lyme tribe gathered. Then! The automatic sprinklers erupted, drenching us and necessitating makeshift dams constructed from random rocks and tarps! Lymies are survivors- we enjoyed two wondrous hours together! Amen.

More thanks to Shannon Connoyer, Sandi Bohle, and my new friends at Ventura Lyme Support. This event went along more smoothly, yet we lost a few folks due to our location somehow not showing up on GPS!

I appreciate the stricken, the caregivers, the healthcare providers, for joining us, all your great questions, and of course our famous synergy. My visit with each host was a delight.

Back home now, I’m prepping for North Carolina in April and getting the sponsorship package together for my upcoming radio show; “In the Lyme-Light with Katina Makris.” This is a huge step for Lyme- our own radio talk show!

So many more events to come in 2013, and my efforts to get “Out of the Woods” in audio format continue, as well as foreign translations. We’re off to a superb start!

Thank you California! You treated me well and I hope I brought you some solace and inspiration. The human being is an amazing creature. We are resilient, endowed with inner riches and capable of transformation. I honor the power within us all.

Carolina Here I Come! Lyme Disease Author Brings Hope and Help

The North Carolina Lyme Disease Foundation has invited me to come to their Lyme-ravaged state, bringing pertinent guidance on this swiftly spreading infectious illness epidemic. This is a very exciting opportunity for all!

Unfortunately Lyme and its co-infections have slipped under the radar in all of the South. Most doctors are completely unaware that Lyme is active and spreading, misdiagnosing thousands of cases as the flu, lupus, MS, CFS, ALS, fibromyalgia, arthritis, peri-menopause, depression, anxiety, food allergies, and more. They are following outdated CDC and Infectious Disease Society information from the 1980s that labels Lyme Disease as a mere short-term, two week condition.

Clinical evidence has established that this corkscrew bacteria migrates from the bloodstream, to joints and soft tissue, and eventually to the brain and nervous system, creating assorted chronic symptoms and triggering auto-immune style illnesses.

Currently, there are a mere handful of healthcare practitioners recognizing and treating chronic Lyme in North Carolina. Much education needs to be done.

My two talks, in Raleigh and Chapel Hill in April, are open to the public and sponsored by the North Carolina Lyme Foundation. I will present critical information and guidance on signs and symptoms, diagnostic labs, prevention, and treatment. April 7 in Raleigh, April 8 in Chapel Hill. See details below.

Please tell all of your contacts and friends to come and spread the word! This is the first time anyone has come to North Carolina bringing any sort of help or hope. I am honored to be the first “missionary” in, and of course aim to shift the tides of misunderstanding and Lyme denial in the South. Let us envision this trip as the tipping point!

Please follow the link below for dates, times and locations of these events.

THIS GIRL IS ON FIRE

A friend at the pool today said to me “Katina, I love being near you, your positive energy is so infectious. You just light me up!

I smiled and thanked her, “I’m an upbeat person by nature, but lately I’m on fire!” came my reply. “Lecturing nationally on behalf of Lyme Disease awareness and offering my message of inspiration gives me a huge rush. To have overcome the complete adversity I faced; bedridden, broke, a divorce, a lost career, deeply depressed and to now have healed in so many ways- well, I just have to tell the world!”.

Amy smiled and remarked “Your story is so inspirational, but your very being just radiates so much life and joy. You are a vivid example of what living from your passion and potential is all about, Katina. I’m hoping you rub off on me now and all those people who meet you”.

“I vowed to myself on my sickbed that when I recovered I would do what I felt moved me and hold nothing back. A channel opened in me, I felt it one day when in deep meditation. Energy flooded in my crown chakra. I knew then that I was meant to move forward and live on purpose, not by accident or by default, but with clear intention and with heart”. “Some days I feel lit from within. I can’t hold my energy back. I let it flow- writing, counselling, you name it- I’m in the flow and I won’t suppress it”.

“Yea”, Amy says. “I’m an athlete of 40 years. We athletes know that feeling- it is awesome. Power, drive, joy intersect and it is awesome.”

“I feel graced by this life and my path. I take nothing for granted and walk it with profound thanks and in pride”.

“Keep going Katina. You make me feel happy”.

It felt great to be acknowledged by Amy! This interchange was a confirmation for me, that it is no accident I got so devastatingly ill and lost everything I loved. In turn I was forced to examine myself, my life choices, and ways of being in order to heal. The Lyme Disease ordeal was horrific, but ultimately a journey of personal transformation. Out the other side now, ignited within by my intention to help others find ways to transform their own suffering into rebirth, I know there is no possible way to go back to the old me, the conditioned one, the less conscious one, the over-tasking one. Fueled by spirit, ignited by love, moved by the powers of transformation, I want to encourage those of you struggling with Lyme Disease or any other chronic illness to find resources in your life; people or places, to help you turn within to your own deep heart. Your heart is wise and knowing. It bears much love, even for our wounded self, and it holds faithful energy, always beating for you, sustaining your lifeblood.

Take a moment to close your eyes, take some long deep breaths, put your hand over your heart and feel its steady presence. Thank this beautiful heart of yours for its power and patience, and in this moment say to your own self- “I love you”, and really mean it.

We need to love ourselves in these time of distress. It is from the inside that we heal. Medicines, doctors, foods, others may minister to us from the outside, but we too must minister to our own selves on the inside. Healing takes time, it asks for restoration. The trauma of chronic Lyme Disease wounds the heart and the spirit. Not everyone knows how to mend a broken spirit.

In the meantime, tending to your own precious heart energy and special self is an invaluable step in helping align your inner healing resources. I practiced this simple self-love for years and it has helped me recover from advanced Lyme Disease. It is worth trying and sticking with. I continue this practice still.

I look forward to you too one day hearing words similar to Amy’s “your being radiates so much life and joy”.

With blessings,

Katina I. Makris, CCH, CIH

Lyme Author Speaking in Ventura, California

I will be speaking in Ventura, California on Monday, March 18, 7pm. The Ventura/Westlake Lyme Disease Support Group is hosting me, the public is welcome.

I will be sharing my personal and professional experience with Lyme Disease, the epidemic of our era. Having now surpassed HIV as the quickest spreading infectious illness in the USA, this bacterial infection can affect any age group and all demographics. The tick, many varieties of the species, carry the illness. Migratory birds have transported these infected ticks all around the USA and internationally, with a vengeance over recent decades. Lyme is everywhere now!

Sadly, the CDC and Infectious Illness Society have yet to acknoweldge the ‘chronic’ form of this illness and and estimated 3,000,000 in the USA alone have been infected over the past 10 years and only 10% properly diagnosed, according to the CDC, a conservative group by nature.

I, like all too many, went misdiagnosed, (CFS, migraines, anxiety, IBS) for 5 years, and my entire life collapsed before me, leaving me bedridden, broke and bereft. Having recovered now, 5 years of treatments, I am devoted to sharing my hard earned wisdom on what it takes to beat this treacherous illness and how to attain better diagnostics, manage prevention and mend fully- body, mind & spirit.

I will have my award winning book with me, “Out of the Woods, Healing Lyme Disease, Body, Mind & Spirit”. Please feel free to join us, Q&A will be included at:
