Creating a Supportive On line Community for COVID crisis living via the Global Human Connection Project – Katina’s Story & Commitment

Once upon a time a young girl, with long brown hair and a sensitive spirit, spent her days rambling in the woods, building faerie houses and collecting mica chips as glittering bits to add to her secret moss garden nestled under an old hemlock. This lanky tomboy climbed high up into the grand wolf pines, gazing over the land like a Native American scout. She nursed abandoned, wounded bunnies and lost cats, and by 13 years old, astride her pinto pony Circus Boy, this growing girl decided she wanted to be a doctor when she grew up – most specifically, an endocrinologist, as biology class had piqued her fascination with the symphony chords of these tiny glands.

The awkward young swan who moved with a natural athleticism, gravitated to the rarified air of the Vermont mountains, trekking to high altitudes in her summers, and she volunteered as a candy striper and nurse’s aid every Saturday throughout her high school years at North Shore Community Hospital. By the time she entered Duke University as a pre-med student, her heart was cemented as a healer.

But medicine in the mid-1970s ended up being a stern, clinical, non-congenial atmosphere for the sensitive healer, and after three years working in glaucoma research and in hospital wards, the drive to become a medical physician was stymied, as planted behind a clipboard and doling drugs did not resonate with the compassion she felt for those who suffered, and the medicines felt nothing like her flora friends from the woodlands and meadows she grew up with. So she abandoned medical school.

Adrift on Wall St and unmoored with her lamplight of healing ways misplaced, this young woman serendipitously discovered an ancient healing art called Homeopathy at age 23. From sentence one she knew this was where her talents could take root. Good fortune placed her at the knees of the two greatest practicing homeopaths of the Western world – Dr. George Vithoulkas from Greece and Dr. Fracesco Eiyzaga from Argentina. She studied with these masters and other greats for many years, bringing her innate healing energy, sharp mind, and keen intuition to razor-fine placement.

Katina Irene Makris thrived for two decades as a Classical Homeopath in a small NH hamlet, sat on the board of the Council of Homeopathic Certification for seven years, helping write the national exam, and sustained a burgeoning private practice in partnerships with other medical professionals. She had met her life’s purpose – ministering to those who were unwell and needing to heal. Her reputation stretched throughout New England.

Then, a on sparkling summer day in 2000, this new mother, living a holistic life of decades, fell deeply and mysteriously ill, with profound fatigue, neck pains, searing migraines, collapse, vertigo, and no real diagnosis. Six months later, she was told she had chronic fatigue syndrome. One year later, an anxiety disorder and excruciating meningitis style migraine complex. Eventually, she had foot drop, IBS, fibromyalgia, pericarditis and by year four was 100% bedridden. No one could heal the born healer. Only her treasured homeopathic remedies and acupuncture treatments enabled her to find windows of pain relief or a few nights’ sleep.

By the fifth year, she was bedridden, financially, spiritually, and emotionally broken, divorced and near death. Then, a miracle occurred after many tearful years in isolation and depression. A savvy clinical nutritionist PhD colleague used specialty labs (Igenex and Bowen) to isolate a long-festering case of advanced neurological Lyme disease.

To receive a valid diagnosis was a light in a cavernous, pitch-dark tunnel, and yet how to heal? Five years of antimicrobial herbals, nutritional supplements, homeopathics, acupuncture, rife technology, spiritual healing and personal lifestyle changes enabled Katina to heal and reclaim her life. The return from the underworld of advanced misdiagnosed Lyme disease back to the light of the living, akin to Persephone, was profound. So much so that she wrote a book of inspiration, giving voice to the inner life of a Lyme victim.

Katina had lost everything we strive for in the “American Dream:” home, marriage, savings, health, career, family, community, self-confidence; and yet she held onto something very precious: her life’s calling to bring healing and nurturance to others. In the darkest hours, curled like a wounded animal, sleet tapping on the roof, she prayed for help and healing. Slowly, she rebuilt her body, mind, and spirit. She survived the trial, the tempest, the call of death.

Today, the world knows Katina Makris as the author of “Out of the Woods:Healing Lyme Disease, Body, Mind & Spirit”, her next book “Autoimmune Illness and Lyme Disease Recovery Guide, Mending the Body, Mind & Spirit”, and her fall 2019 release “Loving Yourself Enough to Live”, as well as host of the cutting-edge radio program “Lyme Light Radio,” and perhaps the most inspirational speaker you could meet when it comes to resiliency and passion for overcoming a full life catastrophe as well as motivation on ending the Lyme disease epidemic. She has presented over 209 live presentations and workshops in 8 years, nationally and internationally.

And, underneath the surface, this dynamic woman, who captivated us with a stunning radio interview or an evocative rally speech, has the tender soul of a healer. That same spirit who ministered to foster animals and countless toddlers with ear infections now brings her heartfelt compassion to the enormous stage of the COVID 19 crisis and all those suffering with personal adversity.

I tell you this story about myself for a reason. I am living a life I could never have imagined and I take it all in with deep gratitude, true pride, and honest commitment.

Our society is struggling in dire ways. Infectious and autoimmune diseases are everywhere and have maimed generations. Not everyone recovers the way I so blessedly did. My life’s purpose has become much bigger than me. I am being “led” to foster change, to put voice and power together with wisdom and experience to ignite all the right forces to come together – to work together like that delicately balanced endocrine system orchestration – to crack the cross-over components of illnesses and syndromes, and to ammend the endless emotional and spiritual suffering of a world in need.

Time is not on our side. We are working at grassroots and global levels to address the Coronavirus pandemic. This is good, and we need more states, the Federal Government, and a unification amongst all health care capacities to step up to the plate.

As the world turns now in the confusions and contortions of the swift moving Covid 19 pandemic I have been recruited as an author, speaker and podcast host in a broad reaching critical online community venue of ENORMOUS REACH (20 million in China, 10 million in USA & counting in each continent) , fostered by the vision of a global visionary and humanitarian Matthew Casto and strategist Wayne Pettigrew to create connection, community, resource and understanding in an online capacity of how we cope and grow within the extended quarantines and lockdown isolationism of this sure crisis.

The Global Human Connection, launching the week of May 11,2020 is profound work we are doing. I walk this road with you all, hand in hand. May we find the diagnosis, the research, and the cures for this organism, and may the wounded spirits find love and light and rebirth in our efforts. May the talents and passions of these authors and hands on committed individuals foster an ongoing forum and community for us to share our caring, insights and palpably growing online family with a world in sequestered and sometimes harrowing need .

Through the darkest of times of suffering and trauma, we humans face the dichotomy of death and rebirth. This is nature’s order both clinically with pandemics and at a societal and personal levels Invoke transformation, old structures and systems sadly will crumble and die, as they needs or 40-60 years ago and not the accelerated over externalized rapid multi tasking hamster wheel of recent 20 years with the electronic kingdom yanking us of all ages everywhere, are now different.

For our human needs to ground, nurture an inner life, relate with compassion and cooperation, to slow down and rebalance our duality of an inner and external fulcrum of mankind’s yin and yang fulcrum: receptivity and fertility of creation with the drive to achieve, protect and build are up for current examination.

As hard as this shocking, serious illness is, layered over my years of working with holistic health and lifestyle, the advent of this super bug does not surprise me in some ways. But, we must heed its virility and rapidly learn to adjust to self care, slowed down paces, home & family time, feeding the soul in human simplicity, not the opulent excessives of post WW2 and a relatively graced and luxuriously epidemic free germ warfare in the western world since polio.

We are being tested, personally, professionally and socio-economically. Self reflection, adaptivity, technology, our creative youth and patience will guide us forward in the year and two to come .

But, now I introduce you to the profoundly important and nurturing work of the Global Human Connection project.

Please watch my media feeds, Blogs, emails, and announcements in the next weeks – we are moving quickly to lift this off the ground rapidly – all of the world needs this support.

15 stories and hard earned lessons will be shared in short essays, on line and radio, tv interviews about isolation, parenting tumult, sudden online schooling, Financial shock, kids in flux , relationships fraying, and how to remain healthy (body, mind & spirit) when daily exercise facilities, food shortages, drs offices closed ( not mine ❤️, Been virtual for 7 years) ? Yet, I believe in our youth & the beauty of great scientists working in union.

So, check out the Global Human Collective site launching now & join a forum to truly open your patterning of old ways, in order to grow and succeed in the transformational spectrum of Coronavirus and our eventually more healthily paced new world order / lead by our tech savvy innovative youth .

I’m deeply honored to be one of the 15 authors bringing pathways forward for us all; united with athletes, celebrities, business leaders, artists, authors, students and health care minds from Iran, Italy, Brazil, Africa , USA, UK, China and more . Watch for more on our weekly presentations, writings, interviews, quotes, self help, global community unification and just pure LOVE.. after all

This emotion and motivator unites everyone of us. It is the glue we need after recent decades of over self focus from the infinitesimal to massive governmental and big business greed

Visionary Healer and Founder of Inanna House, Mara Williams returns to Lyme Light Radio

The author of “Nature’s Dirty Needle”, a book for all of us that introduces case histories and the nuances of Lyme disease an co-infections joins me this week on Lyme Light Radio. Also the founder of the first residential tick borne disease treatment center in the making, Inanna House, Mara bears a deep compassion for the decimating damage this illness induces in patient’s lives. Families, careers, psyches and a body can be destroyed when Lyme disease becomes pervasively entrenched within our systems. Akin to the syphillus tragedies of centuries past, Lyme disease is the modern day maiming blood borne infectious illness.

As a seasoned Nurse Practitioner at the USA’s famed Gordon Medical Associates, Mara has extensive knowledge on the assorted modalities necessary to both deal with a new acute infection or the long term chronic types of advanced Lyme disease. Please help me welcome a true healer, a gifted visionary and a passionate Lyme disease advocate to my show this week. Mara’s wisdom is too precious to be missed.

Mara joins Lyme Light Radio this Wednesday, November 19, at 4 PM Eastern Time, 1pm Pacific Time. You can tune in live at http://www.transformationtalkradio.com or on WBLQ AM 1230 in Southern New England.

How I Overcame CFS, Fibromyalgia and Neurological Lyme Disease

Though it was a ten year healing journey in totality, I overcame a bedridden status of 3 years, and loss of everything I held dear; including my marriage and family, home and income, career and well-being, to heal 100% from advanced neurological Lyme disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. This is a true story and one for all struggling with chronic illness to view.

Please see the link here and watch the in depth, intimate and touching interview Dan Neuffer of CFS Unravlled site does with me. This is the stuff of life’s most important callings– your passage to health and happiness.

Katina Makris’ Chronic Lyme Disease & Fibromyalgia Syndrome Recovery

I First fell sick in the summer of 2000. Though living an organic outdoorsy lifestyle with a young family and wonderful husband, I was stricken with a ‘mysterious flu’ that progressed into chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and wicked almost daily migraines. No one knew how to help me. MS, anxiety attacks and more were batted about as my disorders.

I bounced in and out of prominent New England hospitals and doctor’s offices for 5 years- dissipating more each year. The CFS was crippling and my spirit broke. AND, a brilliant clinical nutritionist, PhD, ended up being the beacon in my shallow chamber of shadowed light, whom would finally properly diagnose and treat me–helping me heal fully and now travel the world with my book “OUT OF THE WOODS, HEALING LYME DISEASE, BODY, MIND & SPIRIT ” and broadcast my radio program LYME LIGHT RADIO on WBLQ.net and the famed TheDrPatShow syndicate.

I share this interview with all of you because I am impassioned to bring hope to those in need and information to those whom are confused. My heart is in this for all of those whom are struggling. Please do not ever give up and KNOW there is a way out of your misery. The power of your mind and the belief in your heart can work miracles. We are entwined in this journey of living. Whether it be this story of mine, the breath of a newborn in your arms or the touch of the moonlight on the silvery waters, please know there is hope for your healing.

Teenagers & Lyme Disease Podcast with Dr. Lantsman, Lyme Light Radio

Teenagers get Lyme disease! No age group is exempt from this bacterial infection, spread by the common tick. Incidence of cases contracted is soaring. I learned from researcher, Dr. John Aucott, that the 300,00 annual cases contracted in the USA surpasses the peak of the AIDS epidemic, which teetered at 104,000 cases annually in the late 1980’s. Everyone needs to be tick ALERT nationwide.

On September 4, “Lyme Light Radio with Katina” featured the subject of “Teenagers and Lyme Disease”. This is a powerful show. Please listen to the podcast HERE.

The esteemed Dr. Katherine Lantsman, mypathmedical.com, an Integrative Medicine physician who specializes in tick borne illness embodies my philosophy of success in overcoming Lyme disease. She has a strong handle on the complexity of symptoms this illness induces.

Killing the microbial infections (often more than just borrelia burgdorferi exists inside your body), defining the imbalances and depletions induced from a rampant infection, addressing food, allergies, fungal overgrowth, and tending to emotional and spiritual aspects of chronic illness, she integrates with aplomb.

Please pay close attention to the case she shares of 18 year old “Roger”! It is fascinating to witness how Dr. Lantsman isolated the severe endocrine imbalances he was afflicted with, prominent endocrinologists said he was “fine” and lyme specialists claimed none of the known antibiotic therapies were effective with Roger. Defeated, seriously ill, diabetic, isolated, 30 lbs overweight and sinking at age 19, Roger has made enormous recovery strides in less than one year, via Dr. Lantsman’s Integrative Medicine skills. Her discussion with me is an eye-opener!

Teens often manifest vivid emotional, mental and neurological symptoms from ‘hidden’ Lyme disease infections. Since their nervous systems are still developing and hormones are being rapidly produced, if a bacterial infection sets up residence in their body,  ‘odd’ symptoms surface readily, while their very active immune response may keep physical symptoms at a milder display than adults. Each case is unique though, and a broad spectrum of symptoms may erupt.

Anxiety, insomnia, OCD, ADD/ADHD, headaches, depression, stammering, malaise, poor concentration, angry rages, panic, tics, tourette syndrome, are common manifestations in the nervous system teens easily display with Lyme, and are the majority of the time misdiagnosed, medicated and left malingering.

Body aches, sore joints or ribs, exhaustion, digestive disorders and brain fog are often dismissed as ‘teenage angst’. Lyme beware! The microbes are messing around with our treasured offspring’s chemistry. They are sick and typically misdiagnosed. I have met too many 20 year olds whom were put on adderall for years, complaining with a ‘soccer’ knee injury, and too tired to do homework.

Get them properly test at Igenex or Clongen labs.

Chloe Rapp of Massachusetts bravely shared her ‘lost’ 9 years as a teen, near death’s door, despite aggressive Lyme antibiotic therapy, with us on-air. Thank you, articulate, empathic, intelligent Chloe for holding on to your beautiful spirit during these treacherous times in your life. I applause your tenacity and inner belief that you WILL recover fully, despite the damage Lyme disease and excessive antibiotics induced. Chloe’s message, conveyed in her interview, to promote support in school systems for teens dealing with Lyme disease can not be SHOUTED loud enough! I will help you get this platform going. Teens with Lyme need HELP!

It is my privilege to host “Lyme Light Radio”! Each week we look at Lyme disease and tick borne illness with a different lens. THere is so much we can learn from one another, as well as help promote awareness and dialogue. As always, I thank the powers that be, which helped place me in this role. Please share today’s link with your friends and group.

Dr. Lantsman and Chloe Rapp were profoundly honest and inspirational guests. Thank you for joining us and caring enough to help others. Also, thank you to our sponsor Advanced Cell Training, at AdvancedCellTraining.com, for helping Lyme Light Radio shine.

Healing Intention from Katina Makris speech, Lyme Disease Awareness Rally, Washington DC, 2013

Katina Makris Lyme Rally DC
Katina Makris Lyme Rally DC

“In order to overcome Lyme and be well, it is vital to use the power of our mind-body healing power. You must BELIEVE  in your vibrant future. You must SEE yourself there. Belief is a powerful energy. It triggers the brain to create healthy, feel good neuro-transmitters, which it turn jump start the immune system. BELIEF is something we can each instill. YOU can set a healing intention of your own. You can set an image of yourself in your mind’s eye that is strong and vital and glowing. I did this when I was wrecked, 5 years trapped at home, trembling on my living room sofa, in despair and too weak to walk without help. My doctor said my nervous system was so fragile that in older days he  would have hospitalized me on tranquilizers for repair. Instead, he had me mimic the rest cure in my home. It was an isolating, cavernous time for me.

But, receiving a Lyme diagnosis after 5 years of prominent New England doctors and hospitals telling me nothing was wrong with me other than chronic fatigue syndrome and migraines, I actually felt HOPE. Receiving the Lyme diagnosis gave me hope, because I BELIEVED I could overcome a bacterial infection. That belief gave me power. That power gave me a mission. That mission made me work hard on my commitment. And, I learned how to use the mind-body healing pathway. In those months daily, I visualized myself as strong, vital, radiant and healthy, spreading my arms high and wide like a grand copper beech tree.

And, Here I stand before you, 8 years later, healthy, whole and that very image I willed myself to be. No more Lyme disease, no more chronic fatigue syndrome and I am impassioned to help change the future. To change the future of this Lyme disease atrocity. To help us all use our collective intention to bring healing for all.

Right now here today, in addition, I utter a plea—May this illness be stopped! May the people in power start to listen.  Your voices, your tireless efforts, your willingness to leave your homes, and many of you on limited resources, find your way here to Freedom Plaza is an outpouring of passion, of intention, of commitment, of belief! I applaud every brave spirit here today. Your will is mighty, your heart is powerful and together we are creating a groundswell. Our history, our collective story, our understanding of what Lyme disease looks like and feels like, moves us to take risk, to speak the truth and to manifest a change.  We will amend the suffering, the denial, the crooked thinking.

I believe in the power of the mind, the calling of our heart, and the mighty force of our will. When we can draw on these inner resources well then we can move mountains. We can affect change. We can heal ourselves, others, the planet. If we can all focus together, aligning our hearts and minds in a common energy, then that unified force gains power and momentum.

I believe we can change the future of Lyme disease. I feel the awareness shifting, the call of hundreds of thousands of voices in dire need, pleading for help. I am honored to be a voice for others, to push the envelope, to shift the tides regarding this illness. And, I need us to all bind together.

In my final moments with you now,  I would like to set a healing intention. A healing intention for the Lyme community, as well as each of you individually. Let us take a moment together. Close your eyes if it helps you to center. Put your hand over your heart. In your mind’s eye see yourself as powerful and strong. Now, drop your awareness from your mind, down into your heart. Feel its steady, knowing presence.  It is from our hearts that we heal. Now we bind our mind, our heart and willpower with an intention.

I speak these words of healing intention, with hope. Hope for your healing, for the Lyme community’s healing and for an end to this epidemic. Here are my words of healing intention:

I believe in a healthy future for myself, for my loved ones and those who suffer with Lyme disease.

I trust that the right people, resources and energies will align to arrest this epidemic.

With my own personal will and intention I move forward into a happier, healthier, Lyme-free tomorrow.

May each and every one of us be guided and protected today and always.

Thank you for having me here today. You are wonderful, gifted people. It is my privilege to be in your company.”

National Lyme Disease Rally, Washington, DC, May 25

Please consider coming to Washington, DC for a rally on a public health crisis–Lyme Disease, the #1 fastest spreading infectious illness in the USA. MayDay is the time and place to urge out government and populace to ‘wake up’ to the hidden epidemic

ALL people of all ages, nationalities, regions can be infected by this tricky bacteria, transmitted by common ticks. Your support and presence is essential. See details below:

MAYDAY 2013!
SATURDAY, MAY 25th, 2013
FREEDOM PLAZA
10:30 AM – 2:30 PM
WASHINGTON, DC

Please plan on joining us this Memorial Day weekend at FREEDOM PLAZA in Washington, DC, to show your support for Lyme disease patients, friends and family, promote awareness and URGE CHANGES!

Why a Rally?

Lyme disease and related infections and complications negatively affect millions of lives everyday, yet the denial and ignorance surrounding our disease(s) is astounding. We continue to face far too many needless issues, including (but certainly not limited to) accurate testing, diagnosis/misdiagnoses, an uninformed and misinformed medical community, effective treatments, insurance company denials, obtaining disability, and the high costs of available treatments. The multitude of issues surrounding this highly politicized disease(s) is so vast that the rally is not focusing in on one particular issue for MAYDAY 2013. Pick one, Be sure to put those issues on your Rally signs for the world to see!

As in years’ past, this year’s MAYDAY Rally will help to promote awareness of Lyme disease, to continue to build camaraderie within the ever-growing community, and to keep the pressure on our elected officials and insurance companies to take action regarding their negligence.

What is THE most important aspect of any rally or protest?

PEOPLE, multitudes of us! LOTS! Droves! This Rally needs as many humans as possible to be the success that we all need it to be (Think MILLION HUMAN MARCH!). We need large numbers to effectively present our case not only before Congress and our President, but to the media and the world. There is nothing like a rally in front of the White House, in the heart of our nation’s capitol, to insure that the Lyme message is heard, loud and clear, and that the correct info (as opposed to all of the disinfo that we see daily) is made available!

Friday Evening, May 24th:

We will be gathering at the official event hotel, The Hilton Alexandria Mark Center (please see hotel info below), to meet and greet each other and create signs for the protest the following day. This does not mean that you can’t create your sign at home. Just remember that this National Park does not allow sticks, poles or any other type of holding device for our signs — only the paper signs themselves. Your sign should be what rings true to you, whether a cure, better diagnostic tests, better treatments, better physician education, removal of the flawed IDSA treatment guidelines, etc. You will be exercising YOUR right to protest about YOUR specific issues!

Sign Design Tips:
-Use fewer words so that you can make the font size of your letters/words/images larger and thicker. Trying to cram too much info onto a sign makes for poor visibility from afar. If someone needs to stand a foot or less away from a protest sign to understand it, then you may need to rethink your message strategy.

– Bold colors and contrasting colors stand out more and have a much higher visibility than soft pastels or light, pale colors. GO BIG & BOLD for MAXIMUM IMPACT!

AND BE SURE TO GO GREEN! Even if you cannot afford to purchase an official MAYDAY 2013 t-shirt, please wear your fave green t-shirt so that we will have the highest visibility and impact possible! Also, rain or shine, please bring along a green umbrella to help as a shield from rain or sun, and so that, when used in unison, we make a unique, colorful impact!

Saturday Morning, May 25th

Pre-10:00 AM: Please feel free to get up early and lend a hand with whatever needs to be done prior to the event’s opening time.

IMPORTANT: The shirts with WHITE in the design cost more than the two-color/two-tone blue shirts. So, if a full-color design shirt is too costly, just select one that does not have white in it and the price will be lowered. BUT, remember to GO GREEN for your shirt color — any shade of green that strikes your fancy will be fine — a bouquet of glorious green tones is our goal. THANKS!!!

Carolina On My Mind

Four whirlwind days in one of my favorite states- North Carolina! I’m partial to this land of windswept beaches, blue tinged mountains, and stretching midlands. Most likely this ties in to my years living here, while at Duke University. But, the soft springtime air and gracious hospitality of North Carolineans cannot be dismissed. There is an easy comfort to this pretty region, and some mighty fine food to be savored!

Durham has blossomed. From the old smoky tobacco town I knew in the 1970’s, with its narrow downtown streets scented by a sweet aroma in the gentle mornings, the former, decaying infrastructure has been revamped to a vital commercial district. The college students must love it- great restaurants and clubs, darling shops and tree-lined, freshened streets everywhere.

The relic wooden slat Durham Bulls AA baseball stadium I used to watch minor league games at with my college boyfriend was funky; squeaking bench seats and old-timers spitting chew liberally. It was a colorful slice of small town pro-ball. We liked it. Now, Durham Bulls boast a gleaming, snazzy stadium, rivaling a major-league park in its glamour and comfort. What a skyward leap!

Duke, as you can imagine, has grown astronomically. Tons of new science buildings, hospital expansion, air-conditioned dormitories sprouted amid the old woodlands. I understand the need for progress as a cutting-edge campus and my heart shrank a tad, wistful for the former tie-dyed, frisbee days on the quad. The iPod force of sleek students trailing to classes is less congenial. My alma mater, however, still glowed benevolently in the fine Carolina springtime. Cherry blooms and daffodils dancing were bits of color to my New Englander’s snow-trained eye. What a delicious taste of beauty!

Though treasuring some reunion time with old friends, I came to North Carolina to work, and what long hours I expended! This state is severely infested with ticks, the primary Lyme disease carrier. Over a dozen people told me they pull at least 20 ticks off their bodies each summer, and a dozen a day from pets! Mild winters, lots of low-growing vegetation, and being in an obvious migratory bird fly-way brews a prime Lyme disease habitat. The very sorry situation is the North Carolina doctors and residents are extremely uneducated about this surging epidemic illness.

The North Carolina Lyme Disease Foundation brought me in to help amend the denial, offer solace to the stricken and promote Lyme dialogue. Special thanks go to John Dorney, President, Jan House, Treasurer, and the busy efforts of Frances Kuhlbars and Emily Amber for your excellent support and PR assistance. Dr. Jason Chow of Chapel Hill, and Mary Marchbanks at Carolina Hyperbarics, your generous alliance made dual locations possible for my venues.

As I am all too familiar with, now 40 “Lyme Talks” later, the stricken and caregivers limped in. The weakness, palsies, ashen color are palpable touchstones to my former Lyme-addled life, too. Yet, I gave two inspired, informative presentations, one in Raleigh, the other in Chapel Hill, while fielding massive Q&A’s. So much help is needed, with less than a handful of Lyme-literate doctors in the state. But the work has begun! As the first person to come in from out-of-state to offer support, I am honored to be a lamplight of hope and urge you on to keep Lyme disease awareness work in motion. Inroads can be made.

Dr. Jason Chow is asking all NC residents with Lyme disease to write up a clear, one page story of their Lyme illness and email it to lymeletters@ gmail. com, by April 15th. He aims to present 1,000 Lyme cases to the state Health Department, establishing that Lyme disease does exist throughout North Carolina and it needs recognition! Please participate if you are a resident. This very same measure needs to be modeled in all US states, helping us define the epidemic.

My speaking engagements were long and rather energetically demanding on me, but very worth it, as I know how crucial hope and resource is for those struggling. Having walked the “Lyme Road” for ten arduous years, I intimately fathom the importance a hand-hold of comfort provides.

Thank you one and all for coming out to meet me. I hope “Out of the Woods” finds a special place in your heart. And, lovely North Carolina, you still charm a Yankee girl like me with your blissful springtime grace!

THIS GIRL IS ON FIRE

A friend at the pool today said to me “Katina, I love being near you, your positive energy is so infectious. You just light me up!

I smiled and thanked her, “I’m an upbeat person by nature, but lately I’m on fire!” came my reply. “Lecturing nationally on behalf of Lyme Disease awareness and offering my message of inspiration gives me a huge rush. To have overcome the complete adversity I faced; bedridden, broke, a divorce, a lost career, deeply depressed and to now have healed in so many ways- well, I just have to tell the world!”.

Amy smiled and remarked “Your story is so inspirational, but your very being just radiates so much life and joy. You are a vivid example of what living from your passion and potential is all about, Katina. I’m hoping you rub off on me now and all those people who meet you”.

“I vowed to myself on my sickbed that when I recovered I would do what I felt moved me and hold nothing back. A channel opened in me, I felt it one day when in deep meditation. Energy flooded in my crown chakra. I knew then that I was meant to move forward and live on purpose, not by accident or by default, but with clear intention and with heart”. “Some days I feel lit from within. I can’t hold my energy back. I let it flow- writing, counselling, you name it- I’m in the flow and I won’t suppress it”.

“Yea”, Amy says. “I’m an athlete of 40 years. We athletes know that feeling- it is awesome. Power, drive, joy intersect and it is awesome.”

“I feel graced by this life and my path. I take nothing for granted and walk it with profound thanks and in pride”.

“Keep going Katina. You make me feel happy”.

It felt great to be acknowledged by Amy! This interchange was a confirmation for me, that it is no accident I got so devastatingly ill and lost everything I loved. In turn I was forced to examine myself, my life choices, and ways of being in order to heal. The Lyme Disease ordeal was horrific, but ultimately a journey of personal transformation. Out the other side now, ignited within by my intention to help others find ways to transform their own suffering into rebirth, I know there is no possible way to go back to the old me, the conditioned one, the less conscious one, the over-tasking one. Fueled by spirit, ignited by love, moved by the powers of transformation, I want to encourage those of you struggling with Lyme Disease or any other chronic illness to find resources in your life; people or places, to help you turn within to your own deep heart. Your heart is wise and knowing. It bears much love, even for our wounded self, and it holds faithful energy, always beating for you, sustaining your lifeblood.

Take a moment to close your eyes, take some long deep breaths, put your hand over your heart and feel its steady presence. Thank this beautiful heart of yours for its power and patience, and in this moment say to your own self- “I love you”, and really mean it.

We need to love ourselves in these time of distress. It is from the inside that we heal. Medicines, doctors, foods, others may minister to us from the outside, but we too must minister to our own selves on the inside. Healing takes time, it asks for restoration. The trauma of chronic Lyme Disease wounds the heart and the spirit. Not everyone knows how to mend a broken spirit.

In the meantime, tending to your own precious heart energy and special self is an invaluable step in helping align your inner healing resources. I practiced this simple self-love for years and it has helped me recover from advanced Lyme Disease. It is worth trying and sticking with. I continue this practice still.

I look forward to you too one day hearing words similar to Amy’s “your being radiates so much life and joy”.

With blessings,

Holiday Season is a Time to Cherish

As always, I value the kinship and closeness my family and friends mean to me at the season of gift-giving. These days of sharing our time, gifts and meals is an ingrained ritual in our Judeo-Christian cultures. I like it, as a chance to draw near and be attentive to each other, and for many to show reverence to their faith.

These past few days I have been observing how much healthier and balanced I am from 7 years ago, when Lyme disease had me bedridden and bereft. I was forced to sell my treasured, wonderful home in the woodlands to pay my treacherously steep medical bills. I had lost my vital career years prior, along with my marriage and well-being. My mind was shot, my heart vulnerable and my hope for recovery slim. Yet, so desperately I did not want to be an invalid forever. With the help of a savvy Clinical Nutritionist and Integrative Medical Doc I was starting my healing journey. It took 5 years, and I am well and thriving again! I am deeply grateful and also proud of my tenacity and perseverance.

With this in mind, I wanted to share a passage from my memoir, OUT OF THE WOODS, which helps to remind me and show others that personal inner healing tools are invaluable when moving through chronic illness. Please enjoy this portion of a chapter titled “Moving”.

Near Christmastime, Eli, Hunter, and I venture out to buy a tree. This is a first for us, as I’ve always cut a Charlie Brown hemlock from our woods in years past, adorning the tender finger-like limbs with the Delancey Street market, Hungarian ornaments of my childhood. Now, we mount a generously stout fir, its needles feeling brush-like and full, the wintergreen aroma filling our dollhouse in minutes. Hunter strings up colored lights, weaving the mass through the fragrant branches as Bing Crosby croons carols on the stereo. As woozy as I still feel, my energy dipping and rising with no rhyme or reason throughout the days, I feel a warmth of gratitude within.

After a very long struggle I sense that I’m marking progress in my healing. Three months on cat’s claw and I’m climbing up from the worst of its clutches. Small signs of improvement bolster my hope: a clearer mind, less stomach upset and a faint glow of strength in my limbs. The tune from “The Wizard of Oz” has been tumbling through my mind for weeks now: I’m out of the woods, I’m out of the woods, I’m out of the woods….

Santa arrives, leaving a slew of boxes. Eli’s eyes are star filled as he rips off the vibrant paper, new board games and ice hockey sticks cluttering the room. The quarters are so close we have the Christmas tree placed on top of the coffee table and pushed up against the wall. Teaspoon size snowflakes drift down outside the windows. Lucky is festively attired, coyly wearing a brown velvet antler headband.

“Mommy, Mommy, get the camera!” Eli chants. “Take a picture of Lucky and me.”

It is a moment of perfection.

We close the day with a banquet of food, family, and chatter at Hunter’s sister’s home up the hill. Children, grandparents, and adults with cocktails in hand gather around the burgeoning oak dining table, our number swelling to over twenty. There are smiles and warmth, the feeling of generous embrace from a clan other than my own. There is love.

Today, I take my first steps into tomorrow. I reach way deep down inside into the core of my being. From the pit of my belly I draw forth my formerly sagging will. Making a personal pact of intention, I close my eyes and see myself standing upright and strong like a broad-reaching copper beech tree. I’m smiling and radiant. I look and feel healthy and strong, confident and happy, successful and powerful.

I will heal completely, I tell myself. I will beat the Lyme disease. I will regain my health, strength, and stamina and be be whole, happy, and successful. Starting now I leave the past behind and step into a new and better future. I will be guarded and protected.

From today forward I begin to recite my pact of intention each day in my morning meditation, at first prone on the sofa, then sitting, and eventually standing. I refuse to slip back into the downward spiral of all the cataclysmic tailspins over the past five grueling years. I’m determined to heal. No one will stop me. It will be.

May your healing journeys bring you to the close concert of inner resources I discovered. Willpower, intention, faith, self belief, love and openness can create room for change and healing. I send you strength and grace.
