4). My dear friend and filmmaker Richard J. Longland whose many accomplishments include: Founder & Principal The Arthroplasty Patient Foundation, Inc. Global Discussion on Spine Health & Arthroplasty Getting Back on Their Feet Film BiofilmCommunity.orgWhy Am I Still Sick Film;  has this info to pass on …”Eva Sapi, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biology and Environmental Science at the University of New Haven, hosted my visit 2008. She collaborated with Dr. Alan MacDonald, retired pathologist and Borrelia career researcher, to discover and prove that Borrelia creates biofilms, as microbes have been doing for three billion years.  http://youtu.be/fJqTDnbL7Yo

Using video microscopy, Dr. Sapi’s grad student David Luecke explains in this video how DNA from the Borrelia burgdorferi strain B31 “fluoresces” or glows an eerie green. Any green life forms you see in their various states originate from the B31 strain of Borrelia – one of 100+ strains known. Prior to Dr. Sapi’s pioneering efforts researchers dismissed Borrelia biofilms. As well, Borrelia biofilm would ruffle the feathers of the IDSA, NIH, CDC and (most) insurance companies, as it would spell out an obvious, scientific syllogism for neuroborreliosis – known previously as chronic Lyme Disease. Later, they learned that Sapi et al were correct — that the standard BSK media could be enriched with collagenase (which humans have abundantly) and proved to be ideal for growing spirochetal, slimy communities! This video shows four different life forms alive in the community: spirochetes, cysts, granular and of course the biofilm community itself. Biofilms protect the microbial community from the immune system and antibiotics, which enable infections to live indefinitely inside us. Hence, chronic Borreliosis (chronic Lyme disease).  Note: you may have seen this before in low resolution. I offered it to the producers of Under Our Skin years ago (free of charge). In this HD version, I included some amazing new high res AFM photos and additional explanations. Special thanks to David Luecke, who provided these slides, and of course to the Sapi-MacDonald team!

Richards latest film on biofilms entitled “Why Am I Still Sick?” can be purchased for $ 25.00 with all proceeds going to LACC (Lyme Awareness of Cape Cod) contact me for details.

Massachusetts and Lyme Disease: State of Affairs Update

This week’s Lyme Light Radio broadcast is a chock-filled show. Massachusetts has long been in the ‘hot seat’ regarding all matters related to Lyme disease. Though riddled at pandemic proportions – Cape Cod, The Vineyard, Nantucket, Dover and more showing up to 90% of ticks infected, people being constantly misdiagnosed, many under treated and lost in the insurance company shuffle. Sadly, physicians have been legally limited to only 60 day allotments of antibiotic use, with often tragically ill patients.

But, the tides are turning, due to the mighty work of potent Lyme activists like Trish McCleary of S.L.A.M., Dr. Enid Haller and Dr. Roni DeLuz creating resource Lyme centers, healing retreats and devoted hot-line support from Janet Dooley.

These impassioned, talented women ALL join us on Wednesday 9/18 4PM ET, 1PM PT to update us on the state of affairs in Massachusetts. Is there hope for America, if we follow their lead?

Listen live on 1230 AM WBLQ southern New England and streaming live on TheDrPatShow.com, and TransformationTalkRadio.com

Hi everyone,

I hope you have been enjoying your summer.

I wanted you to know about a new radio show, Lyme Light Radio, that was launched  Wednesday August 14, by my childhood friend, Katina Makris (4pm EST/1pm PST). Please tune in, if you can. This weekly host/ guest/ call-in format show will discuss all matters related to Lyme disease and recovery. Katina’s first guest will be Mara Williams, author of “Nature’s Dirty Needle”.  Besides airing on AM talk radio station 1230 WBLQ, Lyme Light Radio will stream on 3 web stations-  http://www.wblq.net/http://transformationtalkradio.com/ and the syndicated http://www.thedrpatshow.com/.   From bedridden 7 years ago, to writing and promoting her acclaimed book, “Out of the Woods”, Katina is now further strengthening Lyme disease awareness and education by interviewing medical researchers, doctors, physician scientists, advocates, patients, and other Lyme disease experts on the air.  It is a great opportunity to learn and actively participate in the discussion.

Have you seen the room-for-debate blog on “Deconstructing Lyme Disease” in this week’s NY Times?  -Good that the Times is keeping a wide array of Lyme disease issues in the forefront of discussion.  I believe the debate further supports the value of the translational clinical research being conducted by Dr. John Aucott of Johns Hopkins at the Lyme Disease Research Foundation.

If you are on Martha’s Vineyard this weekend, please come to the “Bite Back for a Cure” kickoff bike ride to raise money for Lyme disease awareness and research on August 18th from 11am-1pm.  The Lyme Center of Martha’s Vineyard and Tick Borne Disease Alliance are helping sponsor a day of events, which also includes a lecture by Katina Makris in Chillmark (1pm) and a fundraiser dinner in West Tisbury (6-9PM). http://www.mvlymecenter.org/events/august-18th-bite-back/  Dr. John Aucott, Johns Hopkins’ physician scientist, will be one of the handful of speakers introduced at the dinner and available to meet with throughout the day.  Dr. Aucott’s Lyme Disease Research Foundation continues to lead the charge on Lyme disease clinical research.

Hope you are feeling well and enjoying your summer.

Warm regards,

Nancy Dougherty

P.S. My Lyme disease work has just become even more personal, with our son, Ryan (20), being diagnosed with Lyme disease last week, after complaining about persistent intense headaches, ‘brain fog’, fever, etc.  We are treating him with doxy and hoping he does not end up with persistent symptoms.  A major Boston hospital sent him home without serology, but his pediatrician took the Lyme threat seriously and ordered a Western blot test which came back positive. – If you suspect Lyme disease, you have to be so tenacious!

Bite Back For A Cure – Lyme Disease events

Bite Back For A CureCome join us on gorgeous Martha’s Vineyard, sadly ‘ground zero’ regarding Lyme disease infectious illness density, but a wonderful vacation isle and exciting place to be on August 18, 2013!

In affiliation with the Tick Borne Disease Alliance, a cutting edge group of Lyme enlightened folks based in NYC, we will be providing assorted venues regarding the fastest spreading infectious illness in the USA. See the menu on this flyer and also note that I will be doing a book signing with my award winning Lyme disease memoir and treatment guide, OUT OF THE WOODS, HEALING LYME DISEASE, BODY, MIND & SPIRIT, at: Edgartown Books, 10:00am – 11:30am

I will be presenting a Lyme disease talk at 1:00pm pertaining to signs and symptoms, diagnostic testing, why doctors fail to diagnose 90% of Lyme infections properly, treatment options and inspirational hope for recovery.

I was bedridden for 2 years with advanced Lyme disease, and misdiagnosed with CFS, migraines, anxiety disorders, IBS for 5 years until the Lyme bacteria was finally found by a savvy clinician. During this time I lost all we strive for— my career, income, home, marriage, health and well-being. I have recovered fully and am honored to share my healing story and tools with others, as well as promote Lyme disease awareness worldwide.

These events on August 18 are aligned to help raise research funds and attention for the all too crippling illness, and its stealthy presence in our modern environment. The dinner will be star studded and filled with wonderful energy and information.

Lyme Center of Martha’s Vineyard Hosts Fantastic Events 8/18

ImageSave the date!! Please join us on sun swept, breezy Martha’s Vineyard, Sunday, August 18th, for the time of your life!

Dr. Enid Haller, Dr. Roni DeLuz and Sam Hiser of the Lyme Center of Martha’s Vineyard, along with the Tick Borne Disease Alliance of NYC, are hosting a full day of Lyme disease awareness, education and fundraising activities. lymecentermv.com

America’s #1 fastest spreading infectious illness, Lyme disease has flown under the radar for close to 40 years, misconstrued as a brief short term infection, when in reality, if not properly diagnosed and aggressively treated in early weeks, this corkscrew shaped, augering style bacteria can invade multiple systems of the body, creating debilitating conditions and auto-immune style problems for millions. Our population has been suffering and we must help.

Those of us whom have leave learned the ‘hard way’, are passionate about ending the confusion surrounding Lyme, adamant about raising money for research and devoted to increasing prevention, awareness and treatment options.

Katina Makris, CCH, CIH, author of the award-winning, best-selling book “Out of the Woods: Healing Lyme disease — Body, Mind & Spirit” will be a central player in the Lyme Day on The Vineyard. She will do a book signing at Edgartown Books, 10:00 – 11:30AM, 44 Main St.

Then the TBDA bike-a-thon kick-off will commence at 11:00AM. The key rider, John Donnally, is biking across the USA raising money for Lyme disease research. Cyclists of all ages are welcome to ride at the MV kick off event. Gorgeous views and lovely roads, ending in the quaint, pastoral village of Chilmark.

3:00 – 5:00PM at Chilmark Community Church, Beetleburg Corner (chilmarkchurch.org) Katina Makris presents “Lyme Disease, The Epidemic of Our Time”. Come hear this dynamic, inspirational homeopath and Intuitive Healer share her knowledge, insights, and personal recovery experience on advanced chronic Lyme disease. Q&A included. Katina is a nationally acclaimed public speaker and Lyme educator, as well as host of the new weekly radio talk show “Lyme Light Radio with Katina” on WBLQ.com and TransformationTalkRadio.com. You do not want to miss her appearance! The church is a treasured beauty, too.

Wait! We are not done! On this pinnacle weekend, on America’s glimmering jewel of an island, an evening dinner party and fundraising event, which includes celebrity performers, and visionary words from Lyme disease’s greatest missionaries, will starcap the night, time and location to be announced soon!

Contact Sam Hiser, sam.hiser@gmail.com for reservations and details.

August 18, 2013 promises to be fun filled, important and a catapult forward for our nation, as we aim to find resources and avenues to end this public health crisis, as well as share in the beauty and synergy of healing.

Filled with enthusiasm, meaning and purpose, we invite all of you to the Vineyard, meet the ‘movers and shakers’ in the Lyme world and be part of something bigger than the individuals we each are, but in-fact, the momentum of healing change we can create together.

Please share this; email, tweet, FB, phone call, every which way!! We welcome your caring and sharing.

With true blessings,

Katina Makris, CCH, CIH
