Overcome Autoimmune Illness & Lyme Disease: a survivor and practitioner’s advice

With my newest book available in paperback, kindle and nook, I wanted to give you a glimpse into why I felt it was so critical to give the public my knowledge on how to recover from Autoimmune Illnesses and Lyme disease, now crippling to USA to the tune of 50 million people and around the globe at 250 million. Mending is feasible, and dependency on pharmaceuticals need not be for a lifetime. I beat the odds to mend 100% and I believe many others can too, when they reclaim their personal power.

Here is the INTRODUCTION from  –“Autoimmune Illness & Lyme Disease Recovery Guide, Mending Body, Mind & Spirit” for you to delve into. This is a VERY worthy book of self help tools and extra healthcare resources.

“Chronic health care problems have begun to surface at an alarming rate in recent decades. The spectrum of autoimmune illnesses has been in my lens since I first fell seriously ill in the summer of 2000, with what was initially deemed to be a sinus infection, then probable walking pneumonia, and finally labeled as chronic fatigue syndrome and chronic migraine headaches. Five years later, totally bedridden, broken, and newly divorced, I learned that actually I was maimed and struggling with several “hidden” autoimmune cover finalinfections. The primary misdiagnosed culprit was borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. I also hosted Epstein-Barr virus at frighteningly high levels, a parasite called babesia, and a whopping overgrowth of fungi. My lovely home in the New Hampshire countryside was mold infested and my immune system was spinning out of control with raging inflammation and multiple allergies, plus all sorts of depletions. With a shiny bright eight-year-old son under my wing, could I ever live to see him grown or be well enough to go to his Little League games?

After endless visits to specialists and renowned hospitals in New England with scant success of recovery, good fortune finally appeared in the able hands of a sterling clinical nutritionist colleague of mine who knew how to handle these runaway infectious “bugs” and, more importantly, how to restore the malfunctions of my failing body. We worked on detoxifying me from all sorts of externally and internally created toxins, rebuilding my fatigued adrenal glands and thyroid, helping my mitochondria create fuel again and balancing out all sorts of neurotransmitters and blood sugar swings. It took me five years of devoted adherence to lifestyle, dietary, and emotional changes, and it worked! I mended 100 percent.

Even as a holistic healthcare practitioner myself, I had to examine my life and what made me fall so ill and vulnerable to these microbes, and to allow myself the time and process to embrace transformation at all planes—physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. As a homeopath, I thought I was versed in helping others heal. This experience asked me to learn even more.

The great good of this journey is that I have spent the last fifteen years learning about the crossover currents of the exploding public health care crisis of Lyme disease (and other tick borne diseases) and the relationship to autoimmune diseases. Though there is obvious linkage between them all, science has not yet pieced together the entire jigsaw puzzle. Some brilliant researchers and very talented and courageous practitioners are forging the way. My instincts tell me that when all the “dots” are finally connected, we will fully understand how these assorted microbes can trigger and mimic Lupus and MS and Alzheimer’s and more. Right now though, what I can offer is the invaluable lessons of my own journey, which translates beyond the personal to the multiple millions who walk in the same shoes I did.

Chronic disease in the autoimmune and Lyme disease spectrum presents an individual with multiple challenges. Facing the realization that you are seeking talent and sources outside yourself to find wellness again is daunting and at times extremely frustrating. The endless days of pain, fatigue, solitude, dependency, and confusion seem endless. Many of us experience loss and despair. And yet, we also want to feel hope—hope for bright, happy times and relief from our suffering. Also, hope that someone will know how to cure us!

In these pages I share my understanding of what mending involves. When we fall ill to chronic disease we fracture in a certain way. Things are never quite the same. There is a sense of displacement or that you just do not feel quite right and that you want to correct it all. What I suggest is that something rather grand is being asked of you in this time of disorder. You are being asked to reflect upon you life status—your behaviors and choices and your habits. And then, you are being asked to make some changes in order to mend.

This book provides a toolbox of assorted options to consider. We explore a great deal of what encompasses health and healing and why we get sick. Also, we look at the role of various key factors that create the terrain for autoimmune illness and Lyme disease to blossom. Why do some of us fall ill to these conditions but not others? And, most importantly, how can I mend from the disease and reclaim my well-being and vitality?

The great arc presiding over the entire journey for me, however, has been the enormous breadth and depth of spirituality’s presence. Serious states, like these diseases present, ultimately bring us into concert with energy beyond the simple self. We are entering the domain of personal transformation and what in modern times is akin to a quest—a quest for higher knowledge, for inner strength, and for assistance in the darkest of times. This journey asks for faith and guidance and an unfurling of the powerful connection we innately bear between our mind and our body and our spirit. For we are marvelous and miraculous beings. We just need to learn how to stitch it all together.

I wrote this book for the all too many who feel at odds with themselves while ill or are perhaps are a caregiver of someone in need. We bear enormous internal gifts. However, many of us have not been taught how to “turn on” the healing codes, or we have forgotten. Mending helps us find our inner compass, to recalibrate during a time of lost navigation and to set our sites on a positive outcome. Like any worthy voyage, not every day is a smooth passage. But you can still reach your destination! Optimal health can be attainable even in a stormy crossing. What I present is a fresh look at healing tools to apply. Not all these modalities will work for you, but they are worth examining.

In deepest respect I need to honor my very wise and gifted spiritual teacher and mentor, Dr. Meredith Young-Sowers, who trained me to become an Intuitive Healer and teacher. The metaphysical model I work with in this book is spring-boarded from her thirty-five years of knowledge and experience. The Stillpoint School of Integrative Life Healing and her model focus on the Seven Energy Chakras and correlating bodily systems and emotional couplings we all house. My own healing work with individuals and groups grew from her model. We will look at autoimmune illnesses, Lyme disease, and how to promote healing. These skills I share worked for me and many others.

My professional healing work with Lyme disease and autoimmune illnesses after thirty years in practice as a Classical Homeopath brings another lens into these conditions. In totality you will discover a multi-dimensional approach to recovery, one that incorporates natural medicine, orthodox pragmatics, and metaphysics. Most specifically we will chart a course together through the pivotal domain of personal transformation. For true healing happens on the inside.

Mending: Autoimmune Illnesses & Lyme Disease

MEDICAL DISCLAIMER

Please note that I am trained and certified as a Classical Homeopath (CCH) and Spiritual Healer (CIH). Even though I have worked with individuals in assorted forms of distress and illness, I am not permitted to make a medical diagnosis, perform a physical exam, or administer pharmaceuticals.

My orientation and work has always been to help support and reinforce the person and his or her natural bodily function, and not treat the disease, through the use of homeopathics and spiritual energy healing.

Throughout the pages of this book I refer to particular disease states and syndromes, and additionally I recommend integrative medicine doctors as well as allopathic physicians and naturopaths, acupuncturists, chiropractors, clinical nutritionists, homeopaths, and other healers. My message is that many of these chronic illnesses require more than one specific system of approach in order to mend and achieve a more optimal level of health, and ultimately move into remission or even cure.

Please note however, that I do not attempt to treat or cure any of these conditions throughout these pages, but offer you suggestions and guidelines to seek out the properly trained and licensed professionals to work with you individually in your case.

My goal is to help initiate a stronger utilization of an integrated healthcare system in the USA and for people to realize they obtain much more inner healing power than they ever dreamed. The information provided here is for your self help and education.

The author and publisher do not attempt to offer cure for any particular disease.

Out of The Woods Lyme Disease Healing & Detox Retreats- France, California, Montana

With true pleasure and deep respect to the often devastating and compromising states a Lyme disease or tick borne infection can induce, I am collaborating my decades of professional and 15 years of personal first hand experience with chronic Lyme, in deeply restorative healing retreat settings with the gifted healers of Amara of Ojai Healing Center.

http://amaraojai.com/

Dr Edie Resto, chiropractor and, graduate of Bastyr Naturopathic College, myself and her high caliber team successfully utilize multiple therapeutic modalities. We help assess each individual’s systemic weakness and damages induced by the infections, mold toxins, heavy metals, leaky gut, emotional injury and more via pre-program intake assessment interviews and questionnaires.

Under the direction of Dr. Resto (known lovingly to all as Dr. Edie) and my body-mind-spirit understanding of this complex condition, a personalized plan is created incorporating multiple natural medicine modalities. The “Out of The Woods Lyme Retreat” healing programs are different than any other, taking into consideration the specific client, their condition, past treatments, and a strategically planned course of action. Our practitioners have studied how these reliable modalities compliment each other and how to create a perfected environment for the body to recalibrate and heal. Please visit the AmaraOjai.com website to meet your practitioner team.

Once the client is on location, pre and post benchmarks are established with BioMeridian, Lens Neuro Feedback, homeopathic and energetic practitioner exams and evaluations. Our programs all include Dr Edie’s proven and truly effective deep detox dietary protocol. Each client will receive a customized restorative treatment plan incorporating a personal detox diet, acupuncture and chiropractic sessions, herbal and nutritive supplements, homeopathic remedies, Reiki and Body Resonance treatments, mud and salt baths, herbal hot wraps, detox foot baths, metaphysical energetic healing exercises, meditations and emotional and spiritual supportive renewal. This is truly the comprehensive kind of replenishing healing work so many Lyme disease cases have been ‘craving’!

Our mission is to create nurturing and restorative retreats in beautiful locations that feed the body, mind and spirit. Having worked with thousands of Lyme disease and chronic illness cases, we understand the vast nature of depletion, exhaustion, systemic consequences and the true emotional and spiritual suffering the afflicted experience. True healing necessitates tending to all planes of the being in order to gain wholeness and wellness.

We have three sets of retreats planned for the 2015-6 year. Join us in France this summer (July-August), Ojai, California (February 2016) or Helena Montana (June 2016). Of course you are welcome to attend all! See more details on the Amara Healing Center website.

Lyme disease asks us to dig deep. Establishing an amalgam of therapies to help the body, mind and spirit to purge toxins, bad patterns, unwanted mental grooves, wayward biochemistry and self-defeating beliefs is critical to reforming an interior platform of clear, fresh terrain in order for the benefits of supplements, homeopathics, dietary changes, medicines to work, and prompt healthier new cells to form as well as a more optimal ‘mindset’ to prompt better immune, endocrine and neurological functions and other bodily functions.

The ‘older’ version of focusing primarily on killing off the Lyme and co-infections microbes brings a person only ‘so far’ in their complete healing. Most chronic cases plateau once the bulk of the infectious organisms have been reduced. However, a great deal of damage and depletions have been inflicted from fighting a severe infection for months and years, as well as often sky-high degrees of toxic cellular debris and endotoxins (ammonia overload) in many cases. This is where the Out Of The Woods Retreats are special and unique.

We are uniting the best of traditional medicine and complementary natural medicine with a team of practitioners to work with you. Our approach aims to restore depletions, improve energy, rid ‘brain fog’ and cognitive impairment, cleanse toxins and mend the spirit. The emotional and spiritual suffering from Lyme disease is just as intrinsic as the physical. The goal is to help you find a higher calibration of well-being. Two weeks can not encompass ‘curing’ Lyme disease and co-infections, but the retreats are able to help attendees find better balance and a clearer pathway to healing.

The Stranger and Me- A Christmas Blessing

THE QUIET GIFT
At this season of celebration and sharing, many of us extend our love and care for one another with the traditional custom of gift giving.  Santa arrives with a slew of colored parcels or we carefully select the perfect something for a loved one during Hanukkah or Kwanza.  The preparation of cooking and shopping whirls our often hectic lives up a notch into a stratosphere of commotion.  It is fun and crazy-making both.  Amid, all the hub-bub, sometimes it is the quiet gift that reaches most deeply into our hearts.  I share my experience on such an offering.

Dashing amid the wheels of shopping carts, the grocery store is in a pre-Christmas skirmish of shoppers; hams and clementines topping the neighbors’ wares in the aisle with me. So much effort and love goes into these days of sharing and caring, it seems. I am a tad behind the curve this year, only selecting our tree this weekend, actually finding the last one in town, my family due in town tomorrow. Now, its’ bushy branches hoist my childhood ornaments of 50 years ago and my son’s tongue depressor reindeer from first grade. Prettily our tree twinkles in colored baubles, filling our home with cheer and anticipation.

The thought I am percolating on though was prompted earlier today in the market. Reaching for a cart, I backed up and brushed the heel of an elderly woman leaving with her bags of food.  A mere brush of my shoe and somehow she went into stock still frozen mode. I moved ahead and then glanced back…She remained frozen. I turned and went back to check on her  sensing something was wrong.

“Are you Ok?” I ask.

“No. I have a back problem and now am in pain,” an icy voice and stoney glare ahead, not at me.

“I am sorry. I know about pain. Can I help you in some way?” I offer.

“No. No one can help me,” the tone is like cement.

“Should I help you wheel your cart?”

“No.”

“I am sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. My foot just skimmed by your heel,” my sensing words express.
Stillness…no words, no eye contact.
I weave my energy from my heart towards hers…I stay still, too.
She looks at me oddly. I smile. She glowers.

“I hope you have a Merry Christmas,” I suggest.

“Not possible,” she mumbles.

Am I daunted? Am I put off? A bit.

Then a thought arises in me. Her cart is shallow in groceries compared to the others. Maybe she is alone?

“So, do you have family to help you?”

“No.”

It was then that I felt her pain, more than the back or than the shoe skimming. It was the pain of loneliness. I knew that feeling.
I then heard odd words coming from me- “Well, I hope the spirit of your ancestors visit you this holiday. They can be a sort of company, maybe?”

“Yes. I have already lit the candles for them,” the crackled woman says.

Finally, her eyes meet mine.  I see the weariness in her soul.

I smile. She tries to. I nod. She moves on, and I hear very faintly- “God bless.”

Motionless, I absorb this moment of grace.  I turn and enter into the maze of aisles. The holiday freneticism throngs, yet a quiet pool sits in my chest. Two unsuspect strangers, threaded with a simple gift- that of human compassion.

God bless us all, alone, in company, in comfort, in peace, in need, in joy.  It is the gift of the heart that touches most simply.

How I Overcame CFS, Fibromyalgia and Neurological Lyme Disease

Though it was a ten year healing journey in totality, I overcame a bedridden status of 3 years, and loss of everything I held dear; including my marriage and family, home and income, career and well-being, to heal 100% from advanced neurological Lyme disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. This is a true story and one for all struggling with chronic illness to view.

Please see the link here and watch the in depth, intimate and touching interview Dan Neuffer of CFS Unravlled site does with me. This is the stuff of life’s most important callings– your passage to health and happiness.

Katina Makris’ Chronic Lyme Disease & Fibromyalgia Syndrome Recovery

I First fell sick in the summer of 2000. Though living an organic outdoorsy lifestyle with a young family and wonderful husband, I was stricken with a ‘mysterious flu’ that progressed into chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and wicked almost daily migraines. No one knew how to help me. MS, anxiety attacks and more were batted about as my disorders.

I bounced in and out of prominent New England hospitals and doctor’s offices for 5 years- dissipating more each year. The CFS was crippling and my spirit broke. AND, a brilliant clinical nutritionist, PhD, ended up being the beacon in my shallow chamber of shadowed light, whom would finally properly diagnose and treat me–helping me heal fully and now travel the world with my book “OUT OF THE WOODS, HEALING LYME DISEASE, BODY, MIND & SPIRIT ” and broadcast my radio program LYME LIGHT RADIO on WBLQ.net and the famed TheDrPatShow syndicate.

I share this interview with all of you because I am impassioned to bring hope to those in need and information to those whom are confused. My heart is in this for all of those whom are struggling. Please do not ever give up and KNOW there is a way out of your misery. The power of your mind and the belief in your heart can work miracles. We are entwined in this journey of living. Whether it be this story of mine, the breath of a newborn in your arms or the touch of the moonlight on the silvery waters, please know there is hope for your healing.

FORE Lyme Disease Golf Fundraiser a Huge Success

Tournament hosts Catalano and Sargent family flank speakers John B. Donnally and Katina I. Makris
Tournament hosts Catalano and Sargent family flank speakers John B. Donnally and Katina I. Makris
On September 8, 2014, the FORE Lyme Disease Golf Tournament and fundraiser was held at the world famous International Golf Resort in Bolton, MA. Their beautiful course is known as the longest yardage course in the world! The back tees are called “tiger tees” and play at over 8300 yards. Fortunately, our participants played at the white tees, still over 6,500 in yardage.

One hundred players hit the links for a 10:00 AM shotgun start, playing “Best Ball.” Spectacular September weather brought clean, dry, sunny skies. At 3:30 everyone convened for cocktail hour and silent auction bidding, with 150 attendees enjoying a a delicious dinner, award ceremony, and live auction. There was a spectacular show of philanthropy when a signed Tom Brady jersey sold for $2,001. Wow!

John Donnally, Co-Chair of the Tick-Borne Disease Alliance’s Junior Board, champion all-American lacrosse player, Lyme survivor, and incredible advocate who cycled across America in 2013 in the “Bite Back for a Cure” campaign, gave a heartwarming speech.

Event hosts Steve Catalano and Chris Sargent presided, explaining just how seriously Lyme disease has ravaged their families: children still suffering for years, and no cure in sight for so many of us. We learned how committed these men are to making inroads with Lyme, by funding the FORE Lyme Disease golf event, and galvanizing a community to fundraise.

I was honored to be the keynote speaker at this special event, bringing education and inspiration to our audience, as I shared my ten-year Lyme nightmare and complete recovery. The lengthy standing ovation warmed my heart deeply.

When I reflect on the over 80 presentations I have given in two and half years time, I fathom both how widespread the Lyme epidemic is and how paramount it is that events like this keep being created – as the government is “asleep at the wheel” on a public healthcare crisis and grassroots efforts are what will push the tide!

Of most stunning merit is that the tireless efforts of FORE Lyme Disease Golf earned $50,000 in fundraising on this lovely September day! How fantastic is that?!

Congratulations to the Catalanos, Sargents, all the participants, TBDA, and John Donnallly for your amazing contributions to this cause. Lyme disease is not going away and it is triggering all sorts of complicated auto-immune and neurological conditions in multiple generations.

Working hard like this, a twelve-hour day for all there, was tiring, exhilarating, and so very important. I hope other communities can duplicate these efforts.

You can learn more about the event and see photo galleries at https://www.facebook.com/TBDAlliance and on my Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/katina.makris

Thank you Bolton, Massachusetts! – a special accolades to Christin Catalano for extra overdrive work!!! What a spectacular experience. I have new friends forever, now!

You can listen to the archived episode of my interview with event organizer Christin Catalano at http://www.LymeLightRadio.com

Blessings abound,

Katina Makris

Lyme in The South Music Fest 2014Lyme in the South Music Fest was sheer magic! Thank you to the enormous collaboration of so many folks’ efforts, energy, talent, time and endless details that went into creating this beautiful event. Melissa Bell, Greg Kirk, Amy Boggs, and a troop of volunteers worked for months masterfully pulling off the first Lyme disease fundraiser and awareness festival in Florida.

I have to admit I am smitten with Jacksonville, Florida. I never expected this port city to be so enchanting – pristine weather, sunny skies, and a glimmering skyline welcoming us all. Our hosts’ gracious hospitality filled us with care and charm. My new posse of ‘girlfriends’ feel like kindred spirits to me, beautiful ladies who synergistically resonate over the Lyme disease atrocity.

Thanks to Dr. Kerry Clark for your brilliant, tireless tick studies; to Dr. Shirley Hartman for being wise enough to face the illness, and integrating so many recovery tools in your practice. Thank you to Dr. Terry Hashey for your open-minded and patently generous heart. Thank you to the 300+ people who came to the festival, some in wheelchairs, some using canes, drained with fatigue, to share with us all! Your spirits are mighty and your willingness to support this cause is ultimately life-changing on so many levels.

The venue was lovely, an open air restaurant and deck perched on the riverside, with food and beverages, a stage, and a great view. Newspapers, TVs, media attended. CNN coverage! The Lyme in the South Music Festival made a BIG footprint in the sand! We blew the lid open on the denial of Lyme disease existing in Florida and other Southern states. Every person I met at the Fest either had firsthand experience with Lyme disease or were there in allegiance. The case numbers are climbing. As Dr. Clark and Dr. Hartman pointed out – misdiagnosis is extreme!

Greg Kirk did a masterful job of coordinating the talent. Our performance schedule was dynamite. The seven hours flew by and seemingly without a hitch (though I know “behind the scenes” fires were being snuffed out). Our lineup was stellar:

  • 3:45 PM – Speaker: Melissa Bell of the Florida Lyme Disease Association
  • 4:00 PM – Greg Kirk of the Zen Engines
  • 5:00 PM – Speaker: Dr. Shirley Hartman of the Mandarin Wellness Center
  • 5:30 PM – Piano Rock Musician Alisa Turner
  • 6:30 PM – Speaker: Dr. Kerry Clark of the University of North Florida
  • 7:00 PM – Les Stroud of the “Survivorman” TV Series
  • 8:00 PM – Speaker: Author and activist Katina Makris of Lyme Light Radio

What an honor to be the keynote speaker, bringing hope and healing insight to our audience. As a recoveree and seasoned natural medicine practitioner, I aim to ignite your heart and will; then you can move mountains, personally and beyond.

Our musical performers were all phenomenal! As these Ticked OFF Festivals make their way around the country in the upcoming years, I tell you now – ATTEND! You will be blown away by the talent, the information, and the magic of synergy.

Our music opened with Gregg Kirk of the Zen Engines band, bringing us his beautiful new music, now healed from Lyme and attuned by his John of God experiences. Alisa Drake is a miracle. Atrociously stricken, bedridden, and now cured, she played her heart out. I was so moved by her exquisite songs and her truly lovely countenance. Bless you both.

Les Stroud is dynamite! Known for his blockbuster TV wilderness show “Surivorman,” I never knew Les is also a brilliantly talented songwriter, musician, and charismatic performer. He rocked the house – “Flying” was an exceptionally mesmerizing song.

Our closing act was the very renowned Pat DiNizio of the Smithereens. Besides his phenomenal guitar playing and songs, Pat is a hilarious storyteller. He held us in rapt attention, one vignette falling from his tongue after another.

Now soothed in Floridian night air, Jacksonville’s skyline filled with twinkling lights and starlight bathed us from above. I felt attuned to higher purpose as the “team” gathered on the top deck for a photo op. There we were – advocates, patients, musical performers, speaker, doctors, and real human beings, strung together in fellowship and cause from all walks of like and backgrounds, we banded together for this special festival and fundraiser. I felt grace, and in all honesty, I saw my future laid before me – crystal clear.

Healing, hope, education, breaking down walls and hard work are my chords to strike as the months and years ahead unfurl. More Ticked OFF Music Fests to come! “Lyme Light Radio” to continue soaring around the globe, another book to complete, and joy, beauty, and love to be my wings of flight!

Thank you Florida Lyme Disease Association, Ticked OFF Music Fest, lovely Jacksonville friends and all the attendees. You are beautiful, wise people! And an extra dose of love to my sister, Barbara, who drove up from South Florida to join her big sister with the “Lyme Light” of change.

Visit Facebook to see photos – what a spectacular weekend. It goes down in my history book, for certain.

Namaste,

Katina I. Makris
