Neurological Lyme Borreliosis with Dr. Alan MacDonald

It is with great honor I interview the preeminent Lyme disease research pathologist, Dr. Alan MacDonald, on Lyme Light Radio with Katina Wednesday, March 19, 2014, 4 pm ET/1 pm PT.

Many people recall Dr. MacDonald and his historic work linking Lyme disease to Alzheimer while at South Hampton Hospital Labs, NY from the documentary film “Under Our Skin”. Sadly, the US Government, nor the CDC would fund further studies Dr. MacDonald aimed to do, proving the neurological connection advanced Lyme disease infections can create in humans. MS, Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s type illnesses all are potential outcomes of a bacterial infection caused by borrelia burgdorferi and transmitted by the common tick.

Dr. MacDonald has much to share on air with us. This is an interview I have been so excited for that I feel like a kid before Christmas, as I know this brilliant man’s ongoing current research  could change the face of out future regarding chronic neurological illnesses.

Though the CDC in 2013 upped their annual estimated new acute Lyme disease infection count from the long-standing 30,000 per year to a ten time higher figure of 300,000, we can’t help but wonder where these other several hundred thousands of cases each year have been?

What symptoms do these people exhibit and yet have not been diagnosed as Lyme disease? Are they dementia cases? Fibromyalgia? ALS? RA? MS? CFS?

Dr. MacDonald has proven still births and stroke to be Lyme induced. He cited an astonishing fact to me. Germany has a public health care system with meticulous diagnostic and treatment record keeping. They acknowledge Lyme disease diagnosis by clinical symptoms and openly treat it. In 2012 they reported 750,000 new Lyme disease cases. In 2013, they recorded 1,000,000 new Lyme disease cases! This country is a 1/3 the size of the USA. Our country is in denial, using an outdated lab test, screening for only 1 strain out of 300+ for Borrelia burgdorferi, and will adhere to a standard diagnosis from the IDSA and CDC of merely 4 qualifying symptoms for Lyme disease diagnostics:

  • Bulls-eye rash
  • Joint pain – knee
  • Meningitis migraine
  • Bell’s Palsy – facial droop

The former clinical diagnostic evaluation of pre-1980’s is no longer ‘permitted’ and physicians must rely on confirmation from a blood test, or they tell a patient ‘you do not have Lyme disease’, though a patient presents with couples of symptoms; joint pain and headaches, heart palpitations and knee pain, facial droop and weakness in extremities. The list goes on.

Please join us on TheDrPatShow.com, LymeLightRadio.com and TransformationTalkRadio.com for a cutting edge show!! This wil be one to listen to repeatedly.

ImageAlan MacDonald, MD, is a pathologist with a brilliant career spanning over 30 yrs. In the late 1970’s, he worked diligently to create tests to detect the newly discovered pathogen Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb). Dr. MacDonald was among the first to study Bb in humans. He was the first to publish evidence of Bb cystic forms, granular forms and cell wall deficient forms.

In 2008, Dr. Eva Sapi and Dr. Alan MacDonald published a groundbreaking paper concerning Bb forming protective biofilms, similar to other bacterial pathogens, providing evidence Bb infections are harder to eradicate and more difficult to treat. This information can be seen in the movie Under Our Skin.

Through his research, and with the help of other leading researchers in the fields of molecular and cellular biology, Dr. MacDonald is continuing to pioneer a broader understanding about the behavior of Borrelia burgdorferi as an infectious pathogen.

Thank you Dr. MacDonald for your commitment to the Lyme disease crisis, for your tireless research and for joining me on “Lyme Light Radio”.

Logan McCulloch’s Journey on the Appalachian Trail for Lyme Disease

Many of us are outdoor enthusiasts, campers, hikers, and spiritually connected to nature. The beauty, power and joy of living close to the wilderness lifts and inspires us.

I am a landscape painter. The magic of nature moves me deeply. My memoir “Out of the Woods” depicts my close kinship and energetic support from the snowy winter cathedrals and the alpine vistas. I became horrifically ill with advanced misdiagnosed Lyme disease after 42 years of living with sheer trust and abandonment amid forests and babbling streams. Many of us became infected with Lyme during our time outdoors.

Awareness, prevention, early diagnostics are key issues all of us need to be alert to in today’s Lyme disease epidemic explosion, as ticks are multiplying at rates beyond historically normal (and living in habitats formerly devoid). Lyme disease is not regional , but all throughout North America and the globe.

A very brave, spirited man named Logan McCulloch has done something remarkable. After suffering with a dire case of chronic Lyme disease himself, he has resisted the fear so many feel and has been hiking the entire length of the East Coast on the Appalachian Trail on a mission to educate about Lyme disease!

Hiking the miles of the AT is a feat in itself, and Logan has been working en route. Please join us on Lyme Light Radio, Wednesday February 26, 1pm PT/4pm ET as Logan McCulloch brings us his story, his journey, his discoveries and commitment to the Lyme disease equation.

This should be a very interesting interview, as we get a ground level view of just what the Lyme and tick situation is deep in the forests of the East Coast.

ImageIn many ways Logan McCulloch feels as if he’s prepared for this project for most of his adult life. He is 52 years old and a native of Louisville, Kentucky. For the past 20+ years he has been a non-profit executive with expertise in fundraising, marketing, public relations and public speaking. His current position is Chief Development Officer for the Kentuckian Region of the American Red Cross. In 2003 he hiked 215 miles of The AT and The Long Trail in Vermont over a two week period. During that trek he adopted the trail name (pseudonyms are common among long distance hikers) “Unitic” which now seems somewhat prophetic given the nature and goals of this adventure.

Being an experienced backpacker he thought he was well informed about the facts of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. He was wrong. As he began to personally experience the frustration and suffering caused by the misinformation and ignorance surrounding Lyme disease within his region and across the country, he chose to become active in the public awareness and advocacy efforts of the Kentuckian Lyme Disease Support Group. Since the spring of 2012 he has utilized the skills and relationships developed over his professional career and worked with a core group of veteran “Lyme Warriors” to succeed in:

•Conversing and sharing information with the leading tick entomologist at the University of Kentucky, and the state veterinarian and Assistant Director of the Kentucky Division of Epidemiology (February).

•Having an article published describing my story in the Louisville Courier-Journal (April).

•Hosting a free community screening of the documentary Under Our Skin (May).

•Conducting personal meetings with the Executive Director of the Greater Louisville Medical Society (GLMS), as well as the Director and staff of the Kentucky Division of Epidemiology (June).

•Getting a front-page above the fold article published entitled “Lyme Disease is Under Reported in Kentucky,” that profiled one of the members of our group and included supportive quotes from key staff at the Kentucky Division of Epidemiology, the University of Kentucky Department of Entomology and the GLMS.

This is a book give away show, too! The first 5 callers to WBLQ at 800-930-2819 will receive autographed copies of my award winning book “Out of the Woods”

Logan and I share a deep love of nature. With his journey into the woods I feel it is fitting I share “Out of the Woods” with our audience, for this is a book or true inspiration and recovery tools.

Thank you Logan and to my team at Transformation Talk Radio, the Dr. Pat Show and WBLQ 1230 AM. Plus my trusty assistants Charlotte Ruth, Jake Carr, Luba Williams (FB posters) and Chloe Rapp – you all help make Lyme Light Radio the hit show we hoped it would be! This is a very rewarding and enriching experience.

Tune in!

Dr. Wayne Anderson Discusses Genome Flaws and Links to Chronic Lyme Disease

Some people get infected with the Lyme disease bacteria (borrelia burgdorferi), take the prescribed antibiotics and pull out of the flu like pains and malaise readily. Certain folks get infected and their ultra capable immune function and genetic ancestry enables them to fend off the infection all together. Life goes on smoothly.

Then, there are the estimated 4,000,000 plus people in the USA, and millions more worldwide, whom are struggling with devastating chronic forms of illness created by Lyme disease. Their lives are compromised, fortunes are spent on treatments, many are misdiagnosed with auto-immune illnesses and Lyme or co-infections are the true culprits.

Why do some of us get destroyed by the bacterial infection and others not? Susceptibility is a factor in all illnesses – from a tendency to strep throat, pneumonia, MS or advanced neurological Lyme disease.

Dr. Wayne Anderson of the prominent Gordon Medical Associates team joins me on Wednesday, February 19 1pm PT/4pm ET on Lyme Light Radio. We will explore the fascinating studies of Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker and the ‘genome flaws’ or genetic predisposition some of us were born with that set us up for Lyme disease to create maiming afflictions and ‘trigger’ other disorders.

This is a show you do NOT want to miss! When I heard Dr. Anderson present this information at ILADS Boston 2012, a major ah-ha moment clicked for me! This is ground breaking work and the reason why I was able to heal 100% from advanced neurological Lyme disease, by addressing these issues. It works!

ImageWith a background in education, Dr. Wayne Anderson understands the role of teaching in medical care. Working with grade school students he saw that diet and environment impacted student’s mood and behavior. This sent him back to school for training as a Naturopathic doctor. A growing focus on natural healing approaches in clinical practice in Oregon caused him to broaden his assessment and treatment skills and he earned the designation of Physician Assistant.

For two decades, Dr. Anderson practiced in a busy community-based family medical center, treating individuals and families from birth to old age. His emphasis on patients experiencing chronic illness grew. As he became aware of the prevalence of chronic Lyme disease and related conditions he realized the important part they play in chronic illness.

In 2002, Dr. Anderson left family practice to work with Eric Gordon MD. Now he has a practice with a concentration on chronic illness, using tools and experience from both conventional and integrative medicine. At GMA, with a growing focus on Lyme disease, he has developed a deeper understanding of chronic illness, its treatment, and the frontiers still available as possible solutions.

A curious and dedicated clinician, Dr. Anderson is committed to the ongoing process of learning and teaching. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Anderson maintained his initial focus on teaching. For over 20 years he taught medical students at Touro Osteopathic Medical School, and supervised residents from Sutter Hospital and interns from the Physician Assistant programs in the clinic setting.  He is also a popular speaker on the topics of Lyme disease and neurotoxin illness.

For more than 25 years, Dr. Anderson has known that his patients are partners in the process of learning about and treating their illness, whether they choose conventional or alternative medicine or a combination of both. He listens to understand each patient’s strengths and challenges and improve his effective interaction with them. He sees every person as complex, integrated, and unique, and believes that treatment should optimize health and well-being.

An avid film historian and true music enthusiast, Wayne spends his spare time watching movies, old and new, and listening to a wide selection of music.

Thank you Dr. Anderson – your work with tick borne diseases and ability to educate are brilliant.

Lyme Disease Co-Infections and Mold Issues with Dr. Neil Nathan

Ticks, the primary vector which transmit the bacterial infection of Lyme disease, are like miniature cesspools. They carry numerous other microbes, contributing symptoms akin to Lyme but slightly nuanced. These “co-infections” are difficult to diagnose via blood testing, and are maiming hundreds of thousands of people annually.

Joining us on Lyme Light Radio, Wednesday January 22, 1pm PT/4pm ET is Dr. Neil Nathan, the author of the wonderful nook, “On Hope and Healing: For Those Who Have Fallen Through the Medical Cracks”.

Practicing at the renowned Lyme savvy Integrative medicine facility, Gordon Medical, in Santa Rosa, CA, Dr. Nathan brings us his expertise, keen intelligence and knowledge of how mold issues contribute to the Lyme disease equation, as well.

ImageAt the welcome invitation of his longstanding friend and colleague, Eric Gordon, MD, he joined Gordon Medical Associates in April 2009. This allowed him to become a part of this medical community, along with the bonus of being closer to his three children and his wife’s family, all of whom reside on the West Coast. Dr. Nathan opened the Fort Bragg branch of GMA in August, 2009.

Neil is a gifted physician who is passionate about healing. Since he loves to learn, he considers himself “always a student”, and gets fired up about learning new approaches that might work for his patients. Never satisfied to just learn superficially, when something grabs Neil’s attention, he will research and study with the person who really KNOWS how to do it, so he can maximize its clinical benefits.

Neil’s specialties fit right in with Gordon Medical Associates – Lyme Disease, thyroid disease, chronic illness, chronic pain, autism, and the use of functional medicine and alternative medicine whenever possible. Dr. Nathan has extensive experience with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue, and uses the bio-medical approaches created by his good friend, Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum. For Lyme Disease, Neil works with botanicals, herbs and homeopathy, as well as antibiotics when necessary. He also has expertise in working with chronic pain clinics in Minnesota and Missouri, and really appreciates the opportunity to help relieve pain for those who are suffering. Regardless of the illness or condition, he spends time learning and getting to know each patient to determine how gently or aggressively to treat, and in what manner.

In addition to his background as a family practice physician, Dr. Nathan is also trained in a number of adjuvant modalities, including classical homeopathy, osteopathic manipulation including craniosacral therapy, prolotherapy, hypnosis and Reichian therapy. Dr. Nathan is passionate about seeking healing for those who come to him in need.

A Sacred Energy Prevails

Every New Year’s our quaint hamlet hosts an extraordinary event; we walk a Labyrinth, the same formation as the sacred one at Chartres Cathedral in France. The one that priests and mystics, common folk and royalty have moved through with intention, in prayer or trance for centuries.

We are blessed to have devoted community members ‘tape’ the entire geometric pattern out in exact mathematical proportions faithfully and with precision in our town, December 31 until 5:00pm January 1. Many of us volunteer as ‘guardians’, taking one hour shifts, overseeing the safe-keeping, offering guidance, keeping candles lit, holding a space of reverence, while people of the community move into a New Year with Intention. It is very touching.

In stockinged feet, the snows banking the sturdy brick hall, the old floorboards creak under the thousands of paces taken, as youngsters scamper and the elderly shuffle though the lovely labyrinth. Our old ‘hippie stock’, the local business folks, ministers, dancers, college kids home for the holidays and out of town family mingle, passing in strides, sitting cross-legged in the clover leaf styled center for contemplation.

I love that our town holds this tradition, that we honor an ancient spiritual practice, that we blend and move in silence for 24 hours. Sometimes a pianist or fiddler brings us live accompaniment, often we play chant music in backdrop. I am one of the guardians. It is always a privilege to be part of the graceful syncopations and transcendent energy being created on the dawn of a New Year.

This year’s Labyrinth was as beautiful as always, winter’s low cast light streaming in amber rays through the windows, participants bowed heads, conveying thoughtfulness, openness to divinity and of course, many in prayer. Whenever I bring an outsider to our annual Labyrinth, they leave in awe – the chaotic outside world evaporates, beauty and symmetry are so potent, peace and simplicity overarching tones. There is grace. Spirit is summoned in a common Town Hall.

Many gestures of communion, friendship, love always ensue for me each year – a Labyrinth breeds harmonious undertones. Inside the sacred space we do not talk, but out in the foyer whispered conversations burble.

This year a woman rushed up to me, earnest eyes, hands outstretched, blonde hair capped in woven wool. “Katina, it is because of you that my life is restored. You saved me!” I did not recognize her. Yet, her smile, our hand-holding was so real. “I went to your Lyme talk a year and a half ago at the Grange and you educated us about the faulty Western Blot Test readings by the average GP’s. I remembered that. This sumer I was deathly ill and my doctor said that ‘one band’ positive on the Lyme disease test did not confirm Lyme. He said I didn’t have the illness. I kept getting sicker”.

“Thank you for replying to me email and referring me to Dr.X, she immediately put me on 2 months of antibiotics, followed by herbs for Lyme and I recovered!” joy streaming from her cornflower blue eyes. “That is wonderful. I’m so happy to learn I helped you, and that you jumped on the treatments.”

“You saved my life Katina, and your educational work and healing mission is so important. In fact, you are changing consciousness. Please keep writing and speaking and hosting the Lyme Light Radio show.”

I felt deeply touched there in the New England white clapboard, mahogany railed foyer. Though others acknowledge my mission often, something in that moment of critical honesty made me realize the thousands of miles I have travelled in 2 years, the hundreds of thousands of words I have written on this subject, the endless hours of conversation and healing sessions I have ministered are not in vain.

I had entered my “walk of intention” into the Labyrinth maze on New Year’s day, with a focus to bring “Out of the Woods”, and my new book “Mending” and my Inspirational speaking into International circulation, with the purpose of uniting the powers of Spirit and doctoring, in harmony. My Intention is to help the weary reclaim their inner healing skills, tools I know how to teach. I want health, comfort, support for us all.

This moment of meeting in parting from our sacred Labyrinth reminded me to keep ‘walking the maze’ of life. Like the priests and nuns and seekers of yore, a heart open to guidance and a mind available to creativity, will stay attuned and in turn the purposeful progress of moving with intention will manifest my path, each of our unique paths, in fact.

May we all be able to embrace our purpose, our heart’s desire, to be open to destiny and meet with the God force moving through and around each of us; to bring healing and hope, peace and love to all we encounter.

2014 dawns with a clarity for me within, yet a chock-full life of demands from the outside. May I maintain my balance point, may my muse remain fed, may my loved ones be blessed and may the higher calling I am moved by, as brilliantly vivid as the guiding North star, hold me fast.

Thank you for your kinship – readers, friends, the sick, the lonely, the seekers and healers. Our lives are not by accident. This earth time is precious and ever evolving. I walk it with you, at pace, to a beautiful, healthier tomorrow.

Cheers for a wondrous 2014.

Healing Genius, Dr. David Jernigan and Lyme Disease Road Warrior John Donnally, Light Up on Lyme Light Radio

Lyme Light Radio hosted Dr. David Jernigan of the Hansa Health Care Center in Wichita, Kansas. A gifted health care practitioner, with invaluable treatment experience and research knowledge on tick-borne diseases, Dr. Jernigan brought us compelling insights into what it really requires to overcome chronic Lyme disease. Please listen to our marvelous interview on the archived podcast HERE and available for free on iTunes.

Is it the ‘bugs’ or out body’s ability to deal with the microbial infestations that cause such overwhelming illness, distress and collapse with Lyme disease? A great discussion between Dr. Jernigan and myself on how a human body deals with infection, the concept of supporting immune function and disrepair and what is susceptibility? This is a FANTASTIC Lyme Light Radio show – please listen!

Did you know that every day the average human body caries around 5 pounds of foreign microbes? A shocking thought and a reality check of our personal ecosystem.

John Donnally gave another interview with me too, from Washington, DC, just out of the US Senate Hearings on Lyme disease! Please listen to this brilliant Lyme warrior, and TBDA missionary’s remarks. 40 senators acutely listened to patients, researchers and lawyer testimonials on the misrepresented Lyme disease epidemic. John said it was a powerful and moving experience to be helping facilitate government action regarding ourBiteBack_Header-crop critical public health care crisis.

Welcome home John Donnally. 3,700 miles, 64 days in the bike saddle! You have made history, cycling across America for Lyme disease awareness on the ‘Bite Back for a Cure’ campaign. The Lyme disease community is forever indebted to you and your passionate commitment.

You are a hero on so many levels – we all love you! Our final wrap up with John and TBDA is on our December 18th show. A full review of this cross country Lyme disease educational campaign. Thank you for you hard work and thank you Dr. Jernigan for helping restore lives and promote a more unified healing paradigm. It is a pleasure to host Lyme Light Radio.
